Class 6 (10/24/09)

[1] Alphabets

We have learned vowels (
అచ్చులు 'a-ccu-lu') and consonants (హల్లులు ‘ha-llu-lu’ so far. In this class, we will learn about how we can merge vowels with the consonants to form a rich set of sounds.

By now, you should be able to recognize the vowels (అచ్చులు 'a-ccu-lu').

అ ఆ ఇ ఈ ఉ ఊ ఋ ఎ ఏ ఐ ఓ ఓ ఔ అం అః

The above represents the primary form of the vowels. When the vowels are merged with the consonants, the vowels take their secondary form. For example, take the first consonant “ka” . The result of merging the vowels with the consonant “ka” is shown here.

Did you notice anything different in writing క్ (k)? That is a consonant in its pure form without any vowel merged to it. When we learned consonants, the vowel (a) is already merged to all the consonants.

Many of the American and English words end with consonants in their pure form. For example, here are some example words that are ending with the pure form of the consonants

పాప్ - pop

మాప్ - mop

పిన్ - pin

పెన్ - pen

బిట్ - bit

బెట్ - bet

[2] Vocabulary

We will now learn some words - making use of the consonants and just the vowel (aa)

[3] Rhyme (chu.k chu.k rai.luu)

Telugu:

Transliteration:

chu.k chu.k rai.luu va.stu.M.di

la.DDuu mi.Thaa.yi ti.ni.pi.staa

ka.mma.ni paa.lu taa.pis.taa

Translation:

choo choo train is coming

side! side! move to the side

board the train once it stops

don't cry baby!

I will feed you sweets and candy

I will feed you tasty milk

[4] Exercise

(a) Can you say some English words that end with the pure form of a consonant? How does your first name or last name end?

(b) You can do merging of the vowels with other consonants in similar way. In most of the cases, the rules of how the secondary form is written are simple and straight forward. I have shown you the “ka” gu-Ni-M-ta-mu (క గుణింతము) above. Can you do similar exercise for “ga” gu-Ni-M-tamu ( గుణింతము)?
